On Gather, I'm Looking For ...:
5 individual social entrepreneurs, join me! _________________________________
I have in mind an idea that I believe 12 hands or so can put into reality to ease the escalating shortage of household energy in one heavily deforested remote part of Uganda called Budiope. So if you would join me, please send me a mail at: organic.uganda@yahoo.com
The idea is that of doing a ‘Households Biogas Project’, since the region is predominated by cattle keeping. The main goal is to enable local households switch to the waste-derived energy source ‘biogas’ for their cooking and heating needs—and as such displace fuelwood-driven deforestation. The region is classified by Uganda’s Energy Ministry among the ten leading charcoal producers countrywide.
The helping hands I am asking to join me will not necessarily need to spend a single dollar on the actual project activities, as the construction of digesters shall initially begin with only those households that are able to cover or locally improvise all material requirements—and to pay the mason(s).
As a social worker, you are essentially needed to help in building team capacity for effectively reaching out to as many communities as possible, across this vast region of 1975Km2. This is about facilitating the training of a number of local masons, sensitizing local households and developing a monitoring plan for our intervention. The mason-trainers shall include some experienced masons that are to join us from Mukono district where they have been working on similar projects.
Ultimately, the few initial biogas digesters installed will be a catalyzing factor for the project to leverage other sources of support so that we can reach out to at least 20,000 households through cost-sharing. The region has a total of 44,766 households across 31 parishes and 315 villages.
I currently work with a small CBO called ‘Organic Perspectives’ whose primary aim is to use agroforestry and organic gardening projects to enable local small-scale farmers protect the environment, promote food security and adopt sustainable and economically viable agriculture. We are currently implementing a pilot agroforestry project (near Kamuli town) through which we raise seedlings of fast-growing and multi-purpose leguminous trees that are given out freely to local farmers.
In this, we think a biogas project directly contributes to our target of biodiversity conservation through avoided deforestation. We shall be grateful if you would individually join us in Budiope, or if you have colleagues that could team up along with you. We intend to start work there from December 2009.
